UCI: Be True to Your School!

April 21, 2009

This weekend I returned to my Alma Mater, the University of California at Irvine, where I graduated with the original “Charter Class.”  It was an alumni gathering called “Celebrate,” and I met with the elite of the Alumni organizers, and a classmate, Glen Pritzker, who is now a Dean at a distinguished private prep school catering to the cream of the crop of the educational community.

Pictured here are my friend Glen Pritzker, Peter the UCI Anteater, and yours truly, another one of UCI’s authors. Photo by Jennifer Smith, UCI School of Humanities, Alumni Relations. Thanks Jennifer!

Back in the day, we had a rather vocal minority that somehow changed the course of the campus and had an Anteater voted in as our school mascot.  It was an affront to the “establishment” at the time, not to mention the “jocks,” but today UCI is loud and proud: Zot!

When UCI first opened, there was hardly any landscaping and during the rains it was quite a mess hoofing between classes.  Following in my muddy footprints are such celebrated authors as T.C. Boyle, T. Jefferson Parker, Dr. Daniel Dennett, Charles Wright (who graded my poetry as “doggerel”), and Oakley Hall.
